چکیده

Heteromorphic sex chromosomes are thought to represent a terminal evolutionary endpoint due to their specialized gene content and chromosome-specific regulation. New findings, however, show that an ancient X chromosome reverted to an autosome in the lineage leading to Drosophila.

Genomic changes following the reversal of a Y chromosome to an autosome in Drosophila pseudoobscura

Robertsonian translocations resulting in fusions between sex chromosomes and autosomes shape karyotype evolution by creating new sex chromosomes from autosomes. These translocations can also reverse sex chromosomes back into autosomes, which is especially intriguing given the dramatic differences between autosomes and sex chromosomes. To study the genomic events following a Y chromosome reversa...

Free-living human cells reconfigure their chromosomes in the evolution back to uni-cellularity

Cells of multi-cellular organisms evolve toward uni-cellularity in the form of cancer and, if humans intervene, continue to evolve in cell culture. During this process, gene dosage relationships may evolve in novel ways to cope with the new environment and may regress back to the ancestral uni-cellular state. In this context, the evolution of sex chromosomes vis-a-vis autosomes is of particular...

Sex chromosomes evolved from independent ancestral linkage groups in winged insects.

The evolution of a pair of chromosomes that differ in appearance between males and females (heteromorphic sex chromosomes) has occurred repeatedly across plants and animals. Recent work has shown that the male heterogametic (XY) and female heterogametic (ZW) sex chromosomes evolved independently from different pairs of homomorphic autosomes in the common ancestor of birds and mammals but also t...

Hemizygosity Enhances Purifying Selection: Lack of Fast-Z Evolution in Two Satyrine Butterflies

The fixation probability of a recessive beneficial mutation is increased on the X or Z chromosome, relative to autosomes, because recessive alleles carried by X or Z are exposed to selection in the heterogametic sex. This leads to an increased dN/dS ratio on sex chromosomes relative to autosomes, a pattern called the "fast-X" or "fast-Z" effect. Besides positive selection, the strength of genet...

Evolutionary interactions between sex chromosomes and autosomes

The sex chromosomes offer a genetic apparatus involved in the sex determination in many dioecious organisms. There can be heterogametically defined males and homogametically defined females (the X–Y systems, e.g. humans and Drosophila) or vice versa as heterogametically females and homogametically males (the Z–W systems, e.g. chickens and silkworms). The origin and evolution of sex chromosomes ...
